ACT – Environmental Kitemark?

With a superb donation of £3,000 from the Outdoor Industries Association, a new charitable Trust was launched at the outdoor industriestrade show Go Outdoors on 24 September. OIA Chair Andy Airey presented the cheque to Derek Walker, President of the British Mountaineering Council(BMC). The Access & Conservation Trust (ACT) is a new initiative from the joint mountaineering councils* that will focus on the sustainable use and conservation of the outdoor environment.ACT will support the essential work of the Councils in cliff, mountain and open countryside issues, as they promote the interests of climbers, hill walkers and mountaineers and the freedom to enjoy their activities. In the wake of FMD the need to protect and respect our natural environment was made only too clear and ACT gives everyone the chance toplay a part in access and conservation work.ACT will promote the sustainable use of the outdoor environment by providing support for practical projects, developing policy work, providing information and training volunteers. Organisations contributing to ACT earn the right to display the ACT logo on their products and advertisements. This logo will become the markof an organisation´s commitment to protecting the raw materials of outdoor recreation.ACT, with the backing of the mountaineering councils, will be recognising the input of their Corporate Partners in advertising and editorial material and will be holding a public launch at the Entre-Prises & BMC Festival of Climbing at the Birmingham NIA in December.
