BMC Better Bolts Campaign – apply now Local and regional bolt funds can now apply to the BMC to be considered for the allocation of bolts purchased by the BMC to help improve the state of fixed equipment on popular crags.  Application forms are now available to download from the BMC website.  The closing date for application is 31 May. Detail   BMC youth climbing competition – round 2 results Latest results from the BMC Youth Climbing Series (BRYCS 2007) are now available. Over 350 young climbers aged 7 – 15 took part in the second round of the fun competition on 24 March.  Still to come are the 3rd regional rounds and the Welsh final.  These will be held on 28 April.  The national final will be held at the Edinburgh International Climbing Arena, Ratho, on 30 June. Details IFSC European Bouldering Championships results Juliette Danion (FRA) and David Lama (AUT) have been crowned the new European Bouldering Champions following impressive performances at the IFSC European Bouldering Championships in Birmingham.  The competition was hosted by the BMC as part of the Ordnance Survey Outdoors Show at the NEC on 16-18 March. Brit hope Dave Barrans reached the semi-finals and climbed well but didn´t make it to the final. Sports minister Richard Caborn and John Mann MP visited the BMC stand and spoke to members of the British bouldering team. Detail Concern over Olympic costs The rising budget for the 2012 London Olympics has compounded concerns over funding being diverted from ´non-Olympic sport initiatives. If you´d like to help defend funding for local voluntary and community organisations you can sign an online petition. Detail BMC Equal opportunities Policy Consultation The BMC Equal Opportunities Policy is being reviewed in the light of new legislation. This gives the opportunity to take a fresh look at current policy and make any changes that members feel are necessary. The BMC encourages all members who wish to contribute to do so by 30 April. Detail New Peak District Map now available This new map of the Dark Peak is the third in the BMC´s British Mountain Maps series published by Harvey. The map covers the Peak District´s moorland hills and edges from south of Buxton to north of Marsden, and includes a detailed enlargement of the Kinder plateau. Detail Cheddar Gorge restrictions The winter climbing season at Cheddar Gorge has now ended and some of the cliffs (including High Rock´s Coronation Street) are therefore out of bounds until 1 October. Detail Kilnsey path restored Thanks to Access and Conservation Trust funds, the collapsing footpath in the Dihedral Wall area in the Lake District has been restored by the BMC. Now there´s no excuse for you not to tick the route Relax! Climbing on the Defence Estate The BMC and the Defence Estate continue to work in partnership to improve access to climbing areas on Ministry of Defence (MOD) land. There´s now a dedicated section on the MOD website about climbing opportunities. Detail Vixen Tor update The Vixen Tor Campaign Group met on 7 March in Plymouth to discuss possible new action to regain access to this well-loved crag in Dartmoor. The BMC and the Ramblers Association continue to work in partnership alongside the Dartmoor National Park Authority (DNPA). In order for the DNPA to consider taking strong action, continued public desire for access to the tor must be demonstrated. WHAT´S COMING UP? Detail Lancashire quarry clean-ups Look out for a quarry clean-up coming your way. The Wiltons (early April), Hogton Quarry (3 June, pending access arrangements), Egerton Quarry (30 June). Detail Alpine mountaineering courses Applications can now be made for the Jonathan Conville Memorial Trust Alpine courses taking place during June to early August. The 3-day courses are delivered by professional UIAGM guides and at a subsidised price of only £60 they are top class introduction to Alpine mountaineering. See the BMC website for application forms. The closing date for applications is Friday 20 April. UIAA youth climbing camp in Dolomites The UIAA Youth Commission is holding a climbing camp in the Dolomites this summer.
