Cairngorms National Park to be halved

Scottish Executive proposals to remove some of the remotest mountains in the UK from the proposed Cairngorms National Park, threaten to destroy the integrity of one of the nations most priceless assets. That is the preliminary conclusion of the Cairngorms Campaign who recently petitioned the Scottish Parliament to improve the planning arrangements proposed for the area. Scottish Natural Heritage recommended last year that the park should cover 2,800 sq miles, but the new proposal takes in only about 1,500. Cairngorms Campaign Officer, Bill Wright warned, “The Executive´s unexplained decision to eliminate Perth & Kinross and Angus from the National Park is likely to result in the absurd alignment of the boundary along the summit of what are probably the most remote mountains in the UK.” The Scotsman News story
