Climb Newcastle Bouldering Series!UKC News, Apr 2010© Climb Newcastle

March saw the finale of the Climb Newcastle Winter Bouldering Series, the fifth in a series of events which have seen a consistent superb turn out of around 150 competitors at every round. With the scores tight in many of the categories, and in many of the just as important mini-rivalries, there was all to play for on a very technical set of problems created earlier in the day by the international setting team of Andy Earl, Suzan Dudink and Chris Graham.VIDEO:In the junior events it was Tom Rookes and Sid Graham who came out series winners, Tom making sure of the win on the night with in impressive score of 300 points that would place him well in the senior event. In the senior female category Karin Magog who has dominated the series won again on the night to take the title ahead of Libby Barrow and Kate Watson who has done well in her first year stepping up from the juniors. In the men's event Nigel Callender was finely balancing getting the job done on the night with saving some skin for the next day's British University Championships (which he went on to win), and a great job he did, taking 330 points to clinch victory ahead of the charismatic Rich Gill.In the vets, Steve Crowe was edged on the night by the impressive Tim Carruthers, who travelled across from the West especially, but with another strong performance Steve saw off the challenge of Rick Barnes and Andy's dad, John Earl (who proved he's still got it!) behind to take overall victory. And Ali McDonald squeezed past Helen Wells on the night by 2 points to win overall and become the only one of last year's winners to defend a Winter Bouldering Series title. So after 5 rounds with 283 competitors, over 100,000 points won, £3000 of prizes raffled out and records smashed left, right and centre, the 2009/10 Climb Newcastle Winter Bouldering Series comes to an end with 1 title defended and 5 new winner's names on the WBS trophies. Here's looking forward to November when it all begins again… Full results here: http://news.climbnewcastle.com/index.php?id=285More pictures here: http://news.climbnewcastle.com/index.php?id=286
