Emmett & Gadd – 5 Upsidedown Pitches of Spray On Ice

The awesome and unique route of Spray On – Emmett and Gadd climbed 5 pitches.UKC News, Jan 2011© Christian Pondella Photography

Tim Emmett and Will Gadd have climbed five pitches of their super-ice-route Spray On.The route (full details) is certainly the steepest ice climb in the world, but the pair have not offered a grade, rather leaving the photos and forthcoming video to tell the story of this upside-down adventure.Their route in its current state doesn't quite make it to the top of the cliff, but has finished at the lip of the steep climbing.Commenting on his blog, Gadd said:”Tim and I made it out of the cave and onto the much easier headwall, and to the top of the best-looking ice. If it gets cold again and the ice reforms, we're going back next week to push on with our route, but it's also fine as it is, and ends at a logical place.” They found their bolts from last year's climb by using a metal detector to hunt under the ice.Gadd commented on his blog:I had bought a metal detector at Canadian Tire – “What are you mainly interested in? Finding old jewelry or something?” asked the sales guy. “Something like that,” I answered, “Under ice.”
