It seems that film festivals are becoming ever more popular. This February Fort Williamwill host its first ´Mountain Film Festival´. Here´s the press release we were sent:This coming winter Fort William will host its 1st annual Mountain Film Festival from 22nd February to 2nd March 2003. Along with the best films and first time screenings there are many activities planned from winter skills workshops at Nevis Range to slide shows and lectures in the evenings. The final weekend will see three days of films including the Best of Banff Mountain Film Festival and guest speakers. Jim Curran will be introducing his film „The Bat“ and excerpts of „Rock Queen“ featuring Catherine Destivel´s solo of The Old Man of Hoy. Andy Kirkpatrick will be introducing the first ever screening of his new film featuring his controversial ascent of the Lafaille Route on the west face of Les Drus in winter. Alastair Lee and Douglas M Scott will also be speaking. A trade show of mountaineering and conservation bodies, outdoor gear retailers and manufacturers and a second hand gear sale will all take place. While the Festival this year won´t be a competitive one, we will be running an amateur video short competition. Anyone can enter and local aspiring film makers will be given an opportunity to take part in a video making workshop in the New Year. These videos will be screened along with the rest of the films over the weekend and the prize will be a digital video camera. The film programme will include a Scottish mountaineering retrospective with some classic films made here in the Highland´s and modern films featuring local areas and activists. The end of February can see some of the best climbing and skiing conditions and the Festival will provide climbers and skiers with plenty of evening entertainment. There will be something for everyone at the end of February, so plan your skiing and climbing holiday for that week and come and enjoy some of the best mountain films from around the world.
