Irish Climbing Meet Announced

The Mountaineering Council of Ireland is to organise their first Irish / International Climbing Meet at Fair Head, BallyCastle, on the 6-9th of June 2002. This is to be one of the key MCI events celebrating the United Nations International Year of the Mountains in 2002. They have invited the BMC to nominate 15 representatives to travel to Fairhead and take part in the meet. The main aim of the event is to promote interest in the excellent basalt climbing at Fair Head and establish ongoing links between Irish and UK based climbers. Fairhead has long been recognised as one of the finest crags in Ireland, combining a superb location overlooking Rathlin Island and The Mull of Kintyre. The event will be launched in Tollymore Mountain Center on the 6th June. The programme for the meet will then include three days (dependent on weather) of climbing at Fair Head itself. All of the guests will be met on their arrival in Ireland (ie at airport/ferry terminal), and assigned to a local ´host´ – a climber who knows the area. A dinner will be held in Ballycastle on the Saturday night, June 8th, hosted by the Irish Rock Climbing Committee on behalf of the Mountaineering Council of Ireland, to celebrate the occasion. All accommodation and food during the event, as well as transport from local airports and to and from the crag will be provided by the Mountaineering Council of Ireland. Further details will shortly be available on the BMC website.
