Jukola Relay

Jukola is the single largest orienteering competition in the world, and last weekend around 20,000 people gathered under Simpsio ´mountain´ near Lapua in Finland. Venla (women´s competition) took part in the afternoon (see other news story), but the real action started in the evening with the start of the men´s relay. Running through the night (or what night there is that far north at this time of year), teams of 7 compete in the ultimate club competition. This year´s winners were once again Kalevan Rasti (winners in 2004 and 2005). Perennial favourites Halden SK were 2nd, with last year´s winners Vehkalahden Veikot in 3rd. Top British performance was Graham Gristwood who was in the fourth placed team, Stockholm based IFK Lidingö. Other highly placed Brits were Stephen Palmer in 14th place with Malungs, Jon Duncan in 17th with Kristiansand OK and Scott Fraser in 23rd with Turun Metsänkävijät. Full results can be found here
