Peak District subsurface fire may force closure – again

Firefighters are struggling to contain a fire in the peat at Arnfield Moor near Glossop; now another is battling a similar fire in the Chew Valley. The fires, which travel effectively underground, could force long-term closure of the Peak over the summer, just a fortnight after foot-and-mouth restrictions were lifted. Tinder-dry moorlands could catch fire, argue Peak Park wardens. The BMC and other organisations will be meeting Monday to debate whether to close the park The last closure for this reason was in 1995. More details at the web link below.
