Scottish High School Climbing Competition

The Girls Final Climb-offThe Mountaineering Council of Scotland, 17 Feb 2010© MCofSThe first Scottish High School Climbing Competition was held in January and February 2010 at the Glasgow Climbing Centre.The competition was open to all schools and split into an initial Open Round followed by a Grand Final all held at Glasgow Climbing Centre. Ten competitors made it through to the final on Saturday 6th February.Yan Kalapothakis (Shawlands Academy) did a clean sweep of all his routes to take first place. Second place went to Gregory Gaughan (Balfron High) and third place to Fraser Wiseman (Kelvinside Academy).The girl's category was dominated by a team from Balfron High. A tie breaker was required to separate Eleanor Hopkins and Christe MacLeod.Following an exciting final route the results were:1st Eleanor Hopkins2nd Christie MacLeod3rd Rosie Singleton

Neil Wightwick, Manager of the Glasgow Climbing Centre said:?The Scottish High Schools Climbing Competition has been tried and tested on a relatively small scale this year. Scottish local authorities have already shown a huge amount of interest in becoming involved in next year's competition. We aim to link up with the MCofS and other climbing facilities across Scotland to create a large scale nationwide competition for Scotland's school pupils in 2011.?Kevin Howett, the Mountaineering Council of Scotland (MCofS) Sports Development Officer, said:”The MCofS is targeting the development of climbing through Schools, as it is the perfect sport to contribute to the government's aspirations within the Curriculum for Excellence.
