Weekly Odds & Sods

Back in September we reported on the access fiasco in the Huasceran National Park in the Peruvian Cordilerra Blanca. Well it would appear that the public response may have had some effect. The BMC have issued the following statement on their website:Climbers planning to visit the Cordillera Blanca this summer have been advised by the American Alpine Club (AAC) to proceed with their plans since the regulations and their enforcement are almost certainly not going to be in place this season. Removal of the Park Superintendent due to public discontent over management contracts for administering regions of the Park has set back implementation of the regulations. Additionally, the outcry from climbers and trekkers worldwide has caused the Park to consider a re-evaluation of the regulations. Last October the UIAA, the International Climbing and Mountaineering Federation adopted a motion put forward by the AAC calling upon the Huascaran National Park and INRENA (the Peruvian environmental agency) to work closely with the Peruvian Mountaineering Federation and climbing organisations worldwide to establish policies and use regulations that are “fair and beneficial to both local and visiting climbers, environmental concerns, and the local guiding agencies.” AAC President Mark Richey and local conservation committee member Jim Bartle have requested a meeting of National Park and INRENA officials with Peruvian Mountaineering Federation and AAC representatives, to rewrite the visitor use regulations governing climbing. Dave Graham has added another tick to his tally in Hueco with a quick ascent of Techo de los Tres B. He has suggested a grade of Font 8B+ instead of 8C.
