Whitbarrow Scar WRE and National Event

National Event 2 took place yesterday on a brand new area in the Lake District. Whitbarrow Scar saw over a thousand orienteers from all over the country compete in the race which had been rearranged from last year due to bad weather. It was also a World Ranking Event for the Elite. The courses seem to have been severely underplanned across the board with very short winning times. Pippa Whitehouse (CLOK) won the Women´s Long in just 47 mins whilst Oli Johnson (SYO) took the Men´s victory in 56 mins. In the planetFear office battle Matt Dickinson came out on top in a time of 77 mins with Jenny Johnson just 2 mins down and Shane Ohly (in only his second National Event and first WRE) a further 40 mins down. Results are available here and check out routegadget here to see how it should (and shouldn´t!) be done. There was also a short race nearby on Saturday, results here.Several British Orienteering Squad members however competed in the English National Cross Country Champs in Sunderland instead. Top results came from Rob Baker 87th and Pippa Whitehouse 43rd. Oli Johnson finished 159th, Jenny Johnson 93rd, Aislinn Austin 117th and Rachael Elder 119th.
