Winter Route News

North Wales In Condition In a fairly unprecedented bout of cold weather North Wales has seen a flurry of activity not felt for many a year. The snow began falling early last week and stayed, along with freezing temperatures, until the weekend (when it typically melted as if going out of fashion as thousands of people descended on the area!).Last week Nick Bullock first established the hardest winter route in Wales with Travesty on Clogwyn Du. He climbed the route with Libby Peter and they graded it VIII 8. Clogwyn Du is the black crag towards the summit plateau of the Glyders. He followed that just a couple of days later with the first winter ascent of The Crack (an E1 5b), again on Clogwyn Du. The grade? IX 9! His climbing partner was James McHaffie. You can read more on both of these ascents at UKClimbing Also of note on Thursday Ian Parnell and Rich Cross made what is probably the second ascent of Longland´s route on Cloggy. Normally graded VS, it´s winter grade is VII/VIII. On Friday Ian and Neil Gresham paid a visit to the Devils Appendix in Cwm Idwal, only to be thwarted by Neil dislodging a large chunk of ice which bashed Ian in the lip. If you got up to anything newsworthy, or know somebody who did, during the cold weather please let us know. ———————————————————————– If you have any news worth reporting please contact Matt – matt@planetfear.com / 0114 2969114 ———————————————————————–
