9 Edges Charity Do

Hike, Run or Climb! The 9 Edges Charity Do – September 17th 2006 This is a 20 mile off road event for walkers, runners and climbers to help raise money for a new base for Edale Mountain Rescue Team.  It is over some rough moorland and along gritstone edges, and some navigational ability is required.  There is about 600 feet of height gain.  The route is on the OS Dark and White Peak Maps. Edale Mountain Rescue Team Mountain Rescue in the UK is an entirely voluntary organisation.  Edale Mountain Rescue Team are a particularly busy team ? in 2005 we were called out 113 times to a wide variety of incidents. Over the last 20 years or so we have grown in both the number of team members we need to provide the level of service people expect and in the amount and complexity of the equipment we use. For these reasons we need larger premises to help maintain the essential search and rescue equipment and to assist with training. A local company, Lafarge works, have supported us for many years and have agreed to let us have new, larger premises at their site at Hope. This event is to help raise the money required to fit out the new headquarters, which we expect to be our home for many years to come. Route The event starts at Fairholmes Car Parks, grid reference SK173894.  Walkers and climbers are free to start at any time between 7.30am and 9.30 am.  Runners start at 10am.  Registration will be open from 7.15am until 10am. The route is not marked, although there will be marshals at various points along the route and a suggested route map will be on display at the start of the event.  It follows the 9 gritstone edges: namely, Derwent Edge, Stanage, Burbage North, Burbage South, Froggatt, Curbar, Baslow Edge, Gardoms and Birchens.  Please only use marked public foot paths and bridleways. Kit requirementsParticipants must each carry the following equipment as a minimum.  Random kit checks will take place and if you do not have the correct equipment you will be disqualified.  Windproof whole body cover  Other body cover appropriate for the weather conditions  Hat & gloves (or sun hat, if hot)  Map and compass suitable for navigating the course  Whistle  Polythene survival bag or bespoke emergency shelter  Sun cream  Drink  Emergency food Registration process Please register at the registration desk before starting the event.  We will need your name, contact details in case of emergency and car registration number (if leaving a car at the car park).  You will be issued with your participant number, which you need to display prominently. Facilities Refreshments and toilets will be available at the following resting points (except where indicated):  The start – Fairholmes car park, SK173894 (no refreshments)  Rest stop 1 – Upper Burbage bridge, SK261830 (no toilets)  Rest stop 2 – The Grouse Inn, SK258779  Finish – The Robin Hood, SK281721 There will be race marshals at key points along the route.  If you have any problems please contact one of them.  Also you must comply with any requests they make of you.  Also, Edale Mountain Rescue Team will be attending the event (obviously!) and will be available on call, as they are for all members of the public 24/7. Carparking at Fairholmes is restricted so we would appreciate it if you would arrange to car share or get a lift to the start.  Similarly please do let us know on the entry form if you will require a lift back to Fairholmes to collect your car at the end of the event, so that we can ensure enough bus spaces are available.  There may be a nominal fee for this service. Results and prize giving Please ensure you report to the finish desk IMMEDIATELY when you complete the event.  This will ensure you get an accurate time and also enable us to keep track of who is still participating. Prize winners will be announced at the Robin Hood pub that afternoon.   A copy of the full results can be posted (in which case ensure you complete the appropriate form at the finish desk) or downloaded from the EMRT website shortly after the event. Misc The number of participants is limited, so please get your entry forms in as soon as possible.  Also please notify us if you are accepted to participate but can no longer do so, as we will have a waiting list and it is only fair to let your place go to someone else if you no longer want / need it. The entry fee of £10 applies to all entrants and is non refundable. The raising of sponsorship to participate is optional; however we would encourage everyone to raise a little.  If everyone raised just £30 in sponsorship that would make a MASSIVE difference to the amount we raise. There is a prize for the person who raises the most sponsorship, plus anyone who raises more than £500 in sponsorship will receive one day of outdoor instruction (hiking, climbing, abseiling, navigation techniques ? your choice!) in the Peak District from a qualified instructor for free.
