BMC manage access at Craig Pant Ifan

The British Mountaineering Council will today (Friday 29 September 2006) form a management partnership with the owners of Craig Pant Ifan, permitting a continuation of access for climbers and protecting conservation interests at this site near Tremadog in Gwynedd.Previously, the 16.8 ha broadleaved woodland of Crag Pant Ifan had been managed by the Countryside Council of Wales under a 59 year lease.Guy Keating, BMC Access and Conservation Officer said: ?The agreement between ourselves and the landowner continues the well established tradition of the BMC working with regional partners to ensure climbers can continue to access cliffs faces throughout England and Wales. We have also been working closely with the CCW to ensure the access paths remain in good condition, and this will contribute towards conserving the valuable ecological features of the site ?Doug Oliver, the Countryside Council for Wales´ Senior Reserves Manager in Meirionydd said: “Although Craig Pant Ifan will no longer be managed by the Countryside Council for Wales, CCW is pleased that the BMC and the landowners are keen to ensure that climbing and conservation go hand in hand at this site.”One of Craig Pant Ifan´s most valuable plants is the rock stonecrop, with its creeping stems which cover the rocks and stones of its scree habitat. If sheep don´t graze the scree, this plant could be smothered by scrub, tree saplings, ivy or bramble. We hope that some animal grazing can be introduced in the future, so that this characteristic plant, with its bright yellow flowers, continues to grace the slopes.” The CCW will continue to own the remaining part of the National Nature Reserve ? Craig y Dre. No climbing activity is authorised at the Craig y Dre site. For further information please contact Guy Keating on 0161 438 3313 or email guy@thebmc.co.uk ( Source: BMC )
