BMC Student Seminar Report

The annual BMC Student Seminar has recently taken place at Plas y Brenin, and was attended by representatives of over 60 University Clubs. The weekend event again proved to be a great success, being a mixture of personal skills enhancement, and looking after other members of the Club.Saturday featured a mixture of lectures and practical workshops, from Access and Conservation to Legal Perspectives on Club Activities, First Aid to Care and Maintenance of Equipment and introducing novices to climbing and hill walking. After the traditional bouldering and orienteering competitions, Sunday was a series of detailed, practical workshops. The workshops, run by Plas Y Brenin instructors and a host of highly qualified volunteers covered a wide range of subjects; improvised rescue, navigation, indoor coaching, multi pitch techniques, scrambling, and single pitch issues. With increasing numbers of clubs coming under pressure from their Student Unions, this event becomes more valuable each year. All those attending came away with increased personal skills, and a good base of knowledge to help defend themselves against any restrictive policies. Many thanks to Plas Y Brenin, Cotswold Outdoor, and all the volunteers, without whom this event wouldn?t be possible. If you have any questions regarding Student Clubs, do get in touch with Anne Arran at the BMC.
