The BMC has negotiated a limited amount of summer climbing on the south side of Britain?s most spectacular limestone gorge. As previously reported (Summit 41), The Cheddar Gorge Climbing Project was conceived by Martin Crocker (funded by The BMC and The Climbers? Club) to address the issues of loose rock, aging fixed protection and overgrown crags ? the cumulative effect of which represented an unacceptable threat to public safety at a popular tourist venue frequented by half a million tourists every year, and where many crags overhang a busy road. After a massive volunteer effort many of the gorge?s great buttresses and routes were restored to a climbable condition. In addition, The Longleat Estate also invested £1 million on rock-catch fencing and on removing huge amounts of loose rock and destabilising trees. Check out the BMC website for details of the new access arrangements. ———————————————————————– If you have any news worth reporting please contact Matt – matt@planetfear.com / 0114 2969114 ———————————————————————–
