Everest Guides Cleared

by Mick Ryan Three mountain guides will not face manslaughter charges over the death of their client Michael Matthews on Mount Everest in 1998. Mr Matthews´s father, David brought charges against the guiding agency, Alpine Mountaineering Ltd and three guides.Mr Matthews, aged 22, was the youngest Briton to reach the summit of Mount Everest but perished in unexplained circumstances on the descent from the summit. Judge Geoffrey Rivlin decided the charges against Mr Tinker, of York, Mr Todd, of Kathmandu, Nepal, and Mr Smith, of Verbier, Switzerland, should be dismissed because of insufficient evidence.
