Frank Bennett, Sales Director at Lyon Equipment.”The brief was to describe a Grand Day Out in winter with around 500 words and an image. We were once again overwhelmed and impressed with the response to our creative competition and thank all 36 climbers who went to the effort writing about and sharing one of their best days out. You can read all the entries here: LYON EQUIPMENT COMPETITION: A Grand Day Out”Paul Cornthwaite, Marketing Manager at Lyon Equipment announces the winners.First runner up is Sivoh for her poem describing her ascent of Curved Ridge on the Buachaille. The shear joy of her poem caught our attention but importantly the priority which she put on a day out in the mountains above every day life. Surely we can all relate to that.”Like the air beneath meWorries drop awaySchool? What school?Boys? Who needs them?Give me wind on my brow,A summit above,And a handhold to hang my heart upon.”And what better way to do that than in a poem.A Grand Day Out 25: Glencoe's Classic Mountain: a poemby SivohCongratulations to Sivoh and we hope she goes on to have many similar days in the mountains in the winter.Sivoh wins a pair of La Sportiva Katana rock shoes, a Petzl Corax Harness, and a chalk bag.The second runner up is Colin Smith and his Dilated Moments of Struggle,

Colin describes his inner dialogue on a brave solo adventure. We could feel the fear, the trepidation and the doubt. It was well written, well paced and distilled a grand day out in 500 words very well. We can only guess what he felt when, “reaching the summit, seeing the angle suddenly ease as I pull over the cornice, vista opening to panorama” and that last move was superbly represented in his accompanying illustration.Congratulations to Colin and he also wins a pair of La Sportiva Katana rock shoes, a Petzl Corax Harness, and a chalk bag.THE WINNERThe winner is SonyaD's ,The ApprenticeA great tale well told, equally about Sonya's partner in climb Andy, as a day out on the hill. We found it very accessible and full of emotion: the hate, the suffering, the fear and the joy.”I hate her, I hate it, I hate the early starts, I hate the cold, I hate that I can never decide what bloody jacket to wear and often end up, ironically, too hot! Groaning at the effort of it all. I hate the hot aches, the screaming agony in my calfs, the wading through thigh deep, unconsolidated snow, the fear of avalanche, the fear of cornices, the fear of falling, the fear of hurt, of death. “Using evocative and descriptive language but not overdone. But ultimately it was a love story…”What more could a girl want? The mountains in winter, a gnarly man and a fistful of chocolate.”Congratulations to Sonya you win a Beal Edlinger Rope (10.2 60m), a pair of La Sportiva Katana rock shoes, a Petzl Corax Harness, and a chalk bag.Once again, thanks to all who entered and we look forward to running another Lyon Equipment creative competition later on in the year.UKClimbing.com thanks: Lyon Equipment, Beal, La Sportiva and PetzlThere are THREE more competitions coming up in June, one later today!
