Huge New Bouldering Wall for Newcastle

by Climb Newcastle / Jack Geldard Dedicated bouldering centre Climb Newcastle will be unveiled this Thursday 23rd October in Byker, just outside of Newcastle City Centre. The quarter of a million pounddevelopment is the vision of former British Champion and World Cupwinner Andy Earl, and well known climbers in the regional andnational scene, Chris Graham and Darren Stevenson. The Climb Newcastle team havetransformed a derelict swimming pool into the city´s first dedicatedclimbing centre. The fascinating 3floor building has been neglected since the swimming pool closed in1991.Whilst developing the climbing centre they have also broughtthe building back into condition making it watertight and restoringits services, with many local residents expressing their excitementthat the building will be put to good use once again. The centre promises to be one of thefinest of its kind in the world, offering extensive facilities foreveryone from beginners and children to international athletes, andbacked up with a comprehensive coaching structure written andoverseen by Andy Earl.Chris Graham offers some insight intothe various rooms in the centre as the final pieces of the plywoodpuzzle are put together:”Our coaching room is perfect for kidsand those getting started, not too high and with 6 different anglesto play with there will be plenty of variety in style and difficultyin here alone. Down in the main climbing arena our expert wallbuilders Andy Long and Robert Lamey took no time getting stuck in.The idea in here is thatthere will be several coloured circuits of problems; you simply pickthe colour that matches your desired level and off you go. The greatthing is that the sheer size of this area means that there will be astack of problems to do whatever your ability.” More information can be found on theClimb Newcastle Website.
