by Mick Ryan – UKClimbing.com Lee´s Double Whammy Just over two hours ago On Sight, the climbing film by Alastair Lee, won the Best Climbing Film and the prestigious Grand Prize at the Kendal Mountain Festival, in what was considered the best and strongest year for climbing film entries. On Sight was much anticipated and didn´t fail to deliver on release. It has had rave reviews. It follows several climbers as they attempt rock and ice climbs onsight, with much failure (falls) and success. As usual Lee´s editing rhythm and timing, he´s a musician – as well as a film-maker, author and professional photographer – combined with a superb soundtrack and illuminating interviews, capture the essence of what climbing is all about to many; climbing routes where the outcome is uncertain. Film Judges were John Innerdale (Chairman of Mountain Heritage Trust), Cameron McNeish (editor TGO and broadcaster), Jane Rousseau (camera operator and lighting camera woman, credits include 24 hr party people) and Dave Birkett (looks like Clint Eastwood). Alastair Lee has seen success at Kendal before, including the 2006 release Set in Stone which won Best Climbing Film and the People´s Choice. Last years PSYCHE picked up two awards at Kendal 2007, the Best Adventure Film and the People´s Choice Award. Refelecting the high quality of climbing films today Leo Houlding (festival patron along with Sir Chris Bonington) said that this year was the “strongest climbing line up of all time” Congratulations to Alastair Lee from all of us, and a big thanks from UKClimbing.com for working with us for the last two years.
