Team planetFear 1st event success

Team planetFear made its debut on the adventure racing stage at the weekend in the first of the ACE race 2 day series in Scotland. The event was based in Drumlanrig Castle estate with sections on the forest trails including the purpose built mountain biking routes and out into the surrounding hills. The team, comprising of Phil Scarf, Jonathan Emberton, Heather Monro and Alistair Morris, made an excellent start clearing the run with time in hand to place them third. Many teams were competing as a build up towards the Adventure Racing World Championships in May and the competition was fierce including the extremely strong teams of Aberdeen Asset Management, Inov8, and Sleepmonsters.Five hours and 80km of cycling followed on a mix of bridleways and minor roads included a visit to the birthplace of the bicycle near Thornhill. Unfortunately a puncture meant missing a final checkpoint, dropping Team planetFear to fourth place 20 points adrift of top 3 teams who were now separated by only 1 point. The teams then headed out into the forest again for the night navigation leg. Racing was fast and furious in the one and a half hours available to the teams and the leader board remained unchanged overnight. Due to the lack of rain over the last five weeks the river was unseasonably low. So low in fact that the boats had to be dragged over the shallows a number of times and the trip was like a rollercoaster ride with the boats bouncing from rock to rock. One pair managed to hole their Malibu and ended up walking the whole length of the river dragging the boat after them. It was then straight onto the bike for a flat out pedal back up the valley to the castle before joining a 20km single track route weaving through the woods. Team Inov-8 were struck with two punctures, giving Aberdeen Asset Management chance to pull ahead. The battle for third place between Team planetFear and Sleepmonsters was going to be close with the latter being strong paddlers. However the time they made up in the kayaking was not enough to stop team planetFear pulling ahead on the bike and run taking third place on the podium.Congratulations to the team from all at planetFear!
