World Military Orienteering Championships

The Croation capital, Zagreb, offers to its visitors a handful of cultural and historical particularities and sights from the Illyrian, Roman and early Croatian Middle Age cultural and historical heritage – but not for this week! Runners have been tearing up the countryside to do battle with all other nations in the World Military Orienteering Championships. The Middle and Long distance races have already taken place with some of the best runners in the world taking the top spaces (it seems that all european elite orienteers are also in the army/police forces!?). Big names like Thierry Gueorgiou (FRA – Current World Sprint and Middle Distance Champion), Valentin Novikov (RUS) and Daniel Hubmann (SUI) are all competing in the Mens, and Tatiana Ryabkina (RUS) and Yulia Novikova (RUS) in the Womens. Results from the Middle Distance didn´t raise any eyebrows in the men´s as Gueorgiou took home the Gold, very soon after taking the Gold in the World Championships only 2 weeks ago. In the women´s Tatiana Ryabkina only just took the top spot from compatriot Yulia Novikova by 2 seconds for maximum glory. In the middle it was the Swiss runner, Daniel Hubmann, who got the top podiujm place by beating the Middle Distance Champion, Gueorgiou by over 2 minutes on the gruelling 13.0km course over Croatian rocks. Meanwhile in the women´s Tatiana Ryabkina decided that the Middle Distance title wasn´t enough, taking 1st place in the Long Distance by over 2 minutes from Lithuanian runner Sandra Pau?aité.The Relay is taking place today with plenty of World Class talent on show with strong teams from the Swiss, French and Russians… who will win – find out more results here.
