Everest BC – Volunteers Wanted

A group of medics are planning an expedition to Everest next year. The primary aim of the trip is to take part in fitness experiments at 4 locations on the mountain, including Base Camp and The South Col. The findings from the experiments, it is hoped, will help further the knowledge of critical care treatments for conditions such as acute respiratory distress syndrome, blue babies, cystic fibrosis, emphysema and septic shock. In addition to the above experiments the team are looking for 208 volunteers, each of which will pay £2,395 which will include a return flight from the UK to Kathmandu and a £500 contribution to the scientific research. These volunteers will take part in a 20-odd day trek into Everest Base Camp, research being carried out on them during the walk. Read the whole story on the BBC. Note that this BBC article is mis-leading in that it suggests that 10 of the 208 volunteers will have the opportunity to climb Everest. This is not the case. Those attempting the mountain are the medics organising the trip and will be experimenting on each other as thye progress up the mountain. They are currently training on Cho Oyu. The expeditions are being organised by Jagged Globe. ———————————————————————– If you have any news worth reporting please contact Matt – matt@planetfear.com / 0114 2969114 ———————————————————————–
