Tommy Caldwell and Nick Sagar, having earlier freed every pitch of the Muir Wall on El Capitan, made a single-push free ascent last weekend. The 33-pitch Muir Wall, with around 17 pitches of 5.12 or harder, including three 5.13 pitches. But one pitch right below the top eluded them, and their summit celebration was marred when Yosemite rangers cited the team for illegally power-drilling a few bolts. Caldwell worked on the climb last year but did not free the crux pitch. This year, Caldwell and Sagar led every pitch on the route free, rating the two hardest pitches at 8a+. And now that it has been completed in a single push, the Muir Wall is likely the hardest overall free route to date on El Capitan.
