Remember Alison Hargreaves? I should hope so. She was without doubt Britain?s best ever female mountaineer, infamous for having perished whilst descending K2 in 1995. She drew criticism for pushing the boundaries of high altitude mountaineering at the same time as bringing up two children, and her critics were given more fuel when her late husband Jim Ballard took the two kids to K2 base camp shortly after the accident.Alison was famous amongst climbers and mountaineers alike for her ?live 1 day as a tiger rather than 100 years as a sheep? attitude to life. Well her eldest son Tom, now 17, appears to have inherited his mother?s fire and passion for the hills. Early next year he plans to climb the North Face of the Eiger, solo, a feat Eric Jones became famous for back in 1966. The BBC are said to be interested in filming the event so we can expect plenty of headlines. Let?s hope that they are positive ones.
