Heinrich Harrer Dies

Saturday unfortunately saw the death of 93 year old Austrian Heinrich Harrer. Harrer is best known for a couple of his books, The White Spider, describing the first ascent of the North Face of the Eiger in 1938, and Seven Years in Tibet. The latter describes how he was captured whilst on expedition in the Himalayas, escaped a British Prisoner of War camp to Tibet before befriending and then tutoring the Dalai Lama. This incredible story was made into a film in 1997 starring Bradd Pitt. Source: BBC
