Further to the helicopter search yesterday it seems that all hope has now been given up that Jean Christophe Lafaille is alive on Makalu. The helicopter managed to reach Base Camp where the three resident porters reported not having heard from him since he left last Tuesday. The helicopter also spotted his tent at 7,000m, but could see no sign of him on the mountain. This is tragic news and will come as a great blow to the world of mountaineering and climbing alike.
