The BMC reports that Longstone Edge in the Peak is being threatened by a new proposal for quarrying.Backdale is on the eastern end of Longstone Edge.RMC are submitting an Environmental Impact Assessment on behalf of the owners, Bleaklow Industries, to the National Park Authority. The owner wants to open up a quarry, initially of 10 million tonnes but with the possibility of extension to 100 million tonnes. The impact would be the removal of between two and three kilometres of a scenically and botanically important feature. The proposals are being vigorously opposed by the Friends of the Peak District (0114 266 5822), CPRE, Save Longstone Edge Campaign (01433 631624) and the BMC. ( Source: BMC )
