The ´Great Lakes Run´

The inaugural ?Great Lakes Run? was held on 21st June. A new fell race for 2008 starting in Great Langdale and heading up Bowfell, Esk Pike, Great End, Scafell Pike, Scafell  (via Foxes Tarn) and Slight Side. From Slight Side the final checkpoint was Pike of Blisco, which meant a crossing of the beautiful upper Eskdale, and then off Blisco to finish back in Langdale.  The race started at 11am when it also started raining. It was midsummer?s day but conditions were grim, very windy and rainy with low visibility. The race route was a tough one, ?only? 13 miles but lots of rocky terrain and ascent. The combination of the high rocky ground of the central fells and trackless terrain of Eskdale made for a physically challenging and navigationally demanding route, particularly given the weather. The race was won by Simon Booth and Helene Whitaker in 2:46 and 3:30 respectively.     This race has all the makings of a Lakeland classic. Many thanks to the organisers – let?s hope they do it again next year!
