Jose Pereyra killed in fall in Mexico

We have received the following email informing us of the tragic death of Jose Pereya: Jose Pereyra, the brilliant Venezuelan rock climber of Yosemite fame was killed in a fall on Saturday Jan 4, 2003 at El Potrero Chico, Mexico. He and Emiliano Hernandez of Mexico City were climbing a route called Las Auras which is one of the very few routes in the Potrero which goes all the way to the main summit of the mountain and also one of the few routes in the Potrero which was never cleaned and bolted by the first ascent party. Various teams have backed off or been injured due to the vast amount of loose rock on the route.Jose was leading very near the top of the route, more than 2000 feet up, on easy but very loose terrain, when he fell. His body was recovered yesterday by helicopter.Courtesy of Edward Wright More information can be found at http://www.rockandice.com/
