Ethical Walking Boots?

Campaigning consumer magazine the Ethical Consumer that champions ethical consumer products and highlights environmental, animal rights, social responsibility and politic policies of consumer brands, has been turning a spotlight on the outdoors again. In their previous issue there was an in depth report about the ethics of the major outdoor companies (you can read the news item here) that were involved in the manufacture of sleeping bags, tents and rucksacks. Now it?s the turn of the footwear manufactures with a new report in the current September / October edition.Left: Don´t let your feet end up like this! Choosing your footwear is an important decision for comfortable days on the hill but do many of us consider the ethical implications of what we buy? The report is on the short side but the league table is topped by Vegetarian Shoes. Scarpa are the first ?serious? outdoor boot maker with a high ethical score entering the league table in 6th place. Most of the major brands you?d expect to see in your local shop (or website!) are there including Asolo, Karrimor, Salomon, Zamberlan and Berghaus to name a few. Bottom of the table was The North Face. For more information about the Ethical Consumer please visit their website.
