Fierce competition demands harder boulders Last weekend in Baku saw our 2013 overall boulder champions back on top after missing out on gold in Chongqing the week before. On the men's side, Dmitrii Sharafutdinov took gold, Jan Hojer silver, and Rustam Gelmanov bronze. Hojer and Sharafutdinov have quite a lead in the rankings, but the return of Canada's top boulderer Sean McColl could have quite an impact on the competition. In the women's field, the competition was remarkably close, with the top four women topping all four problems in Baku. As gold medalist Anna Stöhr remarked in a postevent interview, she is looking forward to harder boulders that will further separate the field, since "we would like to battle." Baku bronze medalist Shauna Coxsey is on the hunt for gold, and silver medalist Akiyo Noguchi is sure to put up a fight!
With such fierce competition, this first competition in Europe of the 2014 IFSC World Cup season will definitely be a game-changer.
