Polar Bear Attack!

3,693m Gunnbjorns Fjeld in East Greenland is the highest mountain in the Arctic. Up until recently it had not received a winter ascent due to its remote location and consequent -60C temperatures. A British team have just made the first winter ascent. However they had an interesting time along the way! After completing the route the team were sat around at Base Camp playing Trivial Pursuits in their tents when a roving Polar Bear, hundreds of miles from its normal habitat, ripped open their tent in search of food! Fortunately the team were able to scare off the bear with flares and cooking pans. They kept up a 10 hour overnight vigil of continuous noise-making in order to make sure it had disappeared. Hungry Polar Bears are known for their perseverance and cunning! Also of interest Baz Roberts, expedition co-leader made a paraglide descent from just below the summit (having climbed it a second time for the jump!). ———————————————————————– If you have any news worth reporting please contact Matt – matt@planetfear.com / 0114 2969114 ———————————————————————–
