Smith and Sharma Shine

A large contingent from the British Climbing Team attenede the Rovereto Bouldering World Cup (Italy) on 13/14 Sept. Malcom Smith from Sheffield went into the event with a narrow lead in the rankings (4 points from reigning champion Jerome Meyer of France) and after an exciting final Malcolm was on the podium with a great thrid place, finishing behind Chris Sharma of the USA and winner Cristian Core of Italy. With one round left Malcolm is trailing Cristian by 11 points, but looks safe for at least second place overall having a 63 point lead from thrid placed Jerome Meyer. Other Team members performed well with Gareth Parry (15th) and Alison Martindale (19th) being best placed. It is almost exactly one year since Sharma was disqualified from International competition after testing positive for a ´banned substance´ whilst winning the third round of the Bouldering World Cup in Munich, just days after completing ´Realisation´ his 9a+ route in Ceuse. The Team then headed off for a five day training session at the French National Training centre in Aix en Provence. The Britsih Team is upported by UK Sport, Berghaus, Beal and the Sheffield Centre for Sports Medicine.
