Careless Torque Gets Another Tick

Careless Torque, the infamous Ron Fawcett arete at Stanage, received another ascent on Saturday courtesy of local bouldering guru John Welford. Established in 1987 by Mr Stanage himself and graded a relatively lowly E6 7a, the striking highball problem repelled all who attempted it for many years. John Dunne made a reported early repeat. Malcolm Smith bagged it in cold conditions in December 2001, and Andy Brown was next in February 2004. All ascents to date have been after prior top roped practice of the upper arete. Nobody has made a ground up ascent… James Ibbotson on the lower moves of Careless Torque in 2005. Photo courtesy of Alex Messenger
