Weekly Roundup

Berghaus has been recognised by the Queen?s Awards, one of the most prestigious business awards in the UK, as a winner in the Innovation Category for design and technical developments in outdoor products. Announced each year on the Queen?s birthday, 21 April, the prestigious awards are made to elite companies across three categories of International Trade, Innovation and Sustainable Development. It seems only five minutes since last year?s memorable Kendal festival, but we can already reveal some early details of the highlights you can expect from this November?s event. Because it?s so much more than films, this year the Festival is being re-named the Kendal Mountain Festivals to reflect its separate elements ? the Film Festival, Book Festival, Arts Festival, Extreme Film School and the World Tour. More in-depth detail on films nearer the time, but this year?s lecture line-up looks set to be the best yet – tickets to see well-known personalities like Sir Ranulph Fiennes will almost certainly sell out early. For the mountain addict there?s hotshots such as the irrepressible Timmy O?Neill, Marko Prezelj, Ueli Steck and Tim Emmett. And expect some very special audio-visual experiences, too. The Book Festival has gathered pace quickly. This year?s big news is that the Boardman Tasker Prize for Mountain Literature will now be hosted in Kendal, moving from the Alpine Club in London where it has been based since its inception in 1983. Also appearing at the Book Festival will be the hard-edged traveller Benedict Allen. Together with the specialist mountain bike, white water and ski & board evenings and with rumours of some major film premieres, it promises to be another unmissable year for all outdoor enthusiasts.More details will be released closer to the event; meanwhile the dates are 11-19 November with the main weekend 17-19. Tickets can be bought online or through the box office on 01539 725133.
