Jan 29: Chris Davies – Power of Goodbye – Font 8B/+ by Jack Geldard – Editor – UKC North Wales based climber Chris Davies has repeatedPower of Goodbye (Font 8B/+) at Malatatal, Austria, a problem first climbed by power house Klem Loskot in 2001. Chris commented on the grade: „After chatting to the locals, and questioneing the grade, it seems thatthis is deemed ridiculously hard for 8B, and so I´ve gone for theoriginal grade of 8B+, as claimed by Klem and Bernard Schwaiger. Theproblem has only had four ascents including Klem´s since 2001, so Ithink this speaks volumes!“ On the same trip Wales based Dave Noden repeated Klem Loskot´s other hard test-piece Wrestling with an Alligator, at Font 8B. Chris told UKClimbing.com: „Dave climbed this with his usual flare, not actually wanting to comedown once at the top! This is the first British ascent of this problem- well done that man on one of the most impresive hard ascents of theyear.“ The pair of die-hard boulderers had a great trip to the beautiful wooded area, sleeping out in the trees in temperatures of -10. Chris said: „Malatatal is a really clean, peaceful place, so information on how toget there is hard to come by. I think that this is a great thing – ifpeople want to get there, then they really have to want to! It´s nice to arrive at a venue these days and get really tough grades – not much change here at all for your efforts!“ Chris Davies is supported by Mammut and No Dogma Climbing.
