cutlass 8a+the pirate, 01 Aug 2010© gavinsymonds coll ( chris Docherty )Deep Water Solo Activist Gav Symonds has made what is thought to be the second ascent of Cutlass, the F8a+ at Berry Head, Devon.Cutlass, first climbed by Neil Gresham, is one of the hardest deep water solo routes in the UK.Gav described it thus:”It is a short 10 move V8/V9 boulder problem, starting up some good moves on ok crimps and pockets to a big move off a small two finger pocket to a pinch for right hand… After warming up it came down to a quick one two three. Go one falling going to right hand pinch, go two falling sorting feet holding onto pinch, go three topping out!”Gav climbed the route in the ground up style, after watching a video of Neil Gresham climbing the first ascent.
