Peak District: Update on Fire Risk

With the return of the strong sun and high temperatures, The BMC Peak Access Team have informed us today (28 July) of the latest closures of parts of the Peak District. Open Crags Climbing access will be maintained on the major grit edges South of Stanage Causeway that are owned by the National Park Authority plus the valley of the Burbage Valley, BUT NOT to the adjoining Moorland. The Gritstone crags that are Open are: Stanage, Burbage, Millstone, Froggart, Curbar, Birchens, Windgather, Ramshaw, Hen Cloud, Roaches (Upper and Lower plus Skyline). ALL OTHER GRITSTONE CRAGS ARE CLOSED Please keep off the closed crags as many are on Private land and access could be compromised by climbers disobeying the closure notices Overall, the access to the Peak crags and Moorland is complex and could change depending on the amount (if any) of Rainfall over the weekend. The BMC ask that all climbers stay only to the open crags as detailed above. The current fire risk is quite serious with 6 major fires currently on Dark Peak Moorland. The BMC wish to thank the climbers who reported the Roaches fire that took place earlier in the week. Their prompt action helped save ´unimaginable damage´. This fire was almost certainly arson and the BMC ask its members to report any moorland fires by ringing 999.
