Volunteer Leader Conference

This year´s Entre-Prises & British Mountaineering Council Festival of Climbing includes the first ever Volunteer Leader Conference. On October 16this year former scoutmaster Peter Finlay was found not guilty of the manslaughter of scout Jonathan Attwell, 10, who fell while walking onSnowdon in 1999. This case highlights the need to manage the risks of participation in outdoor activities and the BMC firmly believes that sportand youth organisations have a duty of care for the management of their activities, including the safety of participants. To help support volunteer leaders this conference has been incorporated into the Festival of Climbing on Friday 7 December. Delegates will consider safety, the needs of young participants, volunteer support and training, and liability. Anyone involved in programme or facility management or leading should attend. There will be advice from adventure travel experts JaggedGlobe and contributions from John Cousins of the UK Mountain Training Board and John Bevan, Chair of Trustees, The Scout Association.Legal andinsurance experts will also be on hand.
