Weekly Odds & Sods

Dan Middleton will join the BMC on Tuesday 2 May on a part-time basis as Technical Officer. Milan, 29th March 2006 ? The Italian mountaineer Simone Moro is preparing for yet another vertical exploit: a solo attempt at scaling the 8,516 metre Lhotse, the fourth highest mountain in the world.Moro has made three other attempts at Lhotse during the course of his career. This time he is motivated by the 50th anniversary of the mountain´s very first conquest, achieved by Swiss climbers in 1956.Rather than re-attempt the classic route, Moro aims to forge an alternative route to reach the peak of Lhotse´s western slope. The route will depend on snow, ice and weather conditions once Simone reaches the mountain. On March 29th, Moro left Bergamo for Kathmandu, the capital of Nepal. He will continue his travel to the Everest Base Camp, which is also the base camp for Lhotse, at 5,300 metres. His summit attempt will most likely take place during May after acclimatisation to the high altitude.
