California´s Lisa Rands, aged 25, of Bishop, California, has repeated Yosemite´s famous Camp 4 bouldering problem Midnight Lightning (V8/9) [see Rockfax´s grade table], according to Climbing magazine. She did actually boulder out the whole sequence, including the very worrying mantleshelf move that finishes it. Climbing reckons that it is “probably the first female ascent of the world-famous highball in "true bouldering style.". Lynn Hill did it a couple of years ago, but worked the moves on toprope first – which to some people (Mick Ryan in particular, who led a big debate on the newgroup rec.climbing) “spoilt” the ascent. Climbing reports that Rands succeeded on her second day – which included a “scary” 20-footer onto a single crash pad from the last hard move. ( Source: Climbing magazine )
